Share the Joy

This Sunday is known as Gaudete SundayJoy Sunday. If there is any moment during the Advent season when we should express joy openly and sincerely, it is today. As Christmas draws near, the Church invites us to pause amid our preparations and remember the deeper joy that fills this season: the joy of our salvation.

In the opening prayer of today’s Mass, we ask God to allow us to experience the joy that comes from knowing that Christ was born for us in Bethlehem. The first reading invites us to shout for joy and sing joyfully. Will we allow ourselves to do that today as we celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? And in case we need another reminder, St. Paul tells us twice in the second reading: “Rejoice! Again, I say, rejoice!”

Sharing the Joy

In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist calls us to share what we have with others—especially with those who have nothing. Many people take this call to heart during Advent, giving generously to the poor and to families in need. Those who do so often discover that true joy comes from giving, not receiving.

This is a wonderful moment to involve our children as well. When they see the joy on another person’s face—when they see someone smile or shout with delight because of a gift they helped provide—they learn firsthand what it means to share the joy of Christ.

Receiving the Gift—and Responding with Joy

As we rush around buying gifts for friends and loved ones, we look forward to the moment when they open what we have carefully chosen for them. We hope for a smile—perhaps even excitement or gratitude. Imagine how disappointed we would feel if the reaction were a frown, boredom, or indifference.

Isn’t this sometimes how Jesus is treated?
Despite all He has done for us, many will not even say “Merry Christmas.” Some will not bother to open the greatest gift He has given—a gift purchased with His very life: the gift of salvation.

Perhaps the world’s lack of joy is, in part, because we have not shown our own joy in the faith boldly enough. If we look bored or distracted at Mass, if we celebrate without enthusiasm, if we hide the joy of being loved by Christ, then why should anyone else be drawn to the gift He offers?

A Call to Gaudete Rejoicing

This Sunday, let us open our hearts to receive the joy Jesus longs to give us. Let us allow ourselves to rejoice—with our voices, our smiles, our generosity, and our worship. Those who truly celebrate His love will be filled with His joy.

And once you receive that joy—
Share the joy.
